Match Report - 13 Apr 2009, Borden Village FC 1st XI beat WOODSTOCK PARK

Woodstock’s title hopes took a dent on Easter Monday when Borden ended their nine game unbeaten run. In the early stages it was Borden who settled quickest taking the game to Woodstock and both Mark Barker and Alan Whitehead began to cause all sorts of problems to the visitors defence with their strength in the air After 15 minutes Borden took a deserved lead when Michael Rose floated a free kick into the box Alan Whitehead shrugged off his marker to head firmly past keeper Mark Rees Ten minutes later Woodstock were punished again when Lee Sayer delivered a free kick deep to the far post and this time Mark Barker won it and his downward header was finished by Chris Feliniak who found the net from six yards Woodstock came back strongly and it was home sides turn to be on the back foot Ten minutes before the break Nathan Stevens corner was only partially cleared by Borden’s defence and it was Stevens again who latched on to the loose ball and fired home from the edge of the box to reduce the arrears Five minutes later Woodstock were undone again by yet another set piece involving Rose who delivered his trade mark free kick into the danger zone and Whitehead out jumped the Woodstock defence to head home and extend Borden’s lead Unfortunately in trying to prevent the goal Woodstock’s keeper Mark Rees was injured after colliding with two of his own defenders and had to leave the field of play

After the break Woodstock had the better of exchanges, and looked the more likely to score but the home defence stood firm, although following a breakaway mid way through the half Borden’s Scott Forster nearly added a fourth but shot narrowly wide The remainder of the game saw no further goals and Borden were delighted with three hard earned points
