Match Report

Match Report - 04 Apr 2009, Borden Village FC 1st XI drew with SWALE UNITED

This eagerly awaited local derby resulted in both teams sharing the spoils. Borden started brightly and launched a number of attacks which pinned the visitors in their own half for long periods but failed to breach the visitors defence to any effect However it Swale who took the lead after 20 minutes when a long punt up field cleared the home defence and despite strong appeals for offside striker Paul Holt found himself with enough space and time to drive the ball home The goal seemed to make Borden step up a gear and ten minutes later Daniel Hudson worked his way down the left and crossed the ball to Mark Barker who on the edge of the box and in one movement, skilfully turned to shoot into the bottom corner Ten minutes later Swale were undone again and when Michael Rose cut in from the left to fire past a helpless Sam Dale to put his side in front Within minutes of the restart Borden had two good opportunities to increase their lead but Hudson’s shot rolled agonisingly wide of the post, and minutes later Scott Forster was denied by a tremendous save from Sam Dale By now Swale who were second best in the first half, began to rally and it was their turn to put pressure on the home defence but stalwart defending by Chris Feliniak and Lee Sayer gave little away However with fifteen minutes remaining the visitors did get the goal they were striving for thanks to midfielder Sam Mannering who fastened on to a loose ball on the edge the box to fire an unstoppable shot into the top corner and save the day for Swale Afterwards Borden’s manager Knocker Williams said not for the first time this season he felt that his team had lost 2 points rather than gained 1 but it was enough to take them up one place in the table in their quest for safety Meanwhile Borden Reserves went top of the table by beating Oakwood Res.4 goals to 1
