Match Report - 28 Feb 2009, Borden Village FC 1st XI lost to Tenterden Town

The game started brightly with Borden having the better of the opening exchanges, and after 15 minutes almost went in front when Alan Whitehead headed wide from Michael Rose’s free kick Borden continued to press forward but it was the home side who took the lead against the run of play, and not for the first time this season it was poor defending by the visitors that allowed Tenterden to go in front Borden still looked likely to bounce back, and were rewarded 10 mins later when Phil Jackson found Mark Greene on the edge of the box who turned swiftly to drive a firm shot into the bottom corner of the net Following the break both teams created openings and there was little to chose between the two sides both teams carving out chances that were not taken However on the hour the home side edged in front when Borden were caught in possession and were punished as the home side broke away and scored Once again the visitors were chasing the game and managed to equalise by courtesy of an own goal when Michael Rose floated another dangerous ball into the box and a Tenterden defender in desperation headed the ball past his helpless keeper

This goal spurred Borden on and sensing they could go on to win they launched a series of attacks unfortunately with no end product With the referee looking at his watch and a draw looking a certainty, Borden momentarily forgot their defensive duties and were punished on the stroke of time when they allowed a home defender a free run to drive on, cut in unchallenged, and slide a goal bound shot under the despairing Michael Neat Afterwards Borden’s disappointed manager Knocker Williams said that his side had thrown the game away through lack of concentration and he would make changes next week in order to go in search of that elusive win

Meanwhile in Reserves Division 1 East whilst league leaders New Romney were involved in a cup match, Borden Reserves took full advantage to beat APM Mears 4-2 and replace New Romney at league leaders, Borden’s goals coming from Daniel Hudson 2 , Scott Teague and Paul Teague
