Match Report - 06 Dec 2008, Borden Village FC 1st XI lost to university of kent

Borden travelled to Canterbury on Saturday to play Division 1 high fliers University of Kent in the Les Leckie cup but the students who have bagged 40 goals in the league so far this season, did not have it all their own way against the villagers Play was pretty even in the opening period with both sides crating chances but Borden fell behind after 15 mins when Nicky Fuller upended a home forward in the box and from the resultant penalty keeper Charlie Donoghue despite getting a hand to it failed to stop the ball crossing the line The University then took the initiative and played fast and accurate football showing exactly why they are currently placed third in Divison 1 Ten minutes later they went further ahead following a good exchange of passes and not for the first time this season Borden were once again chasing the game Borden showed character and came back strongly and gained their reward ten minutes before the break when new signing Jay Law threaded a beautifully weighted ball through to Jamie Kurszewski who closed in on goal only to see his shot crash against the underside of the bar with the keeper well beaten, but fortunately for Borden it was the seventeen year old Law who arrived first to bundle the ball over the line and score on his debut After the break both teams created chances to add to the score line and in the final ten minutes it was Borden who were looking the most likely to score but the student’s keeper denied both Fuller and then Kurszewski with point blank saves which would have taken the game into extra time Afterwards Borden’s manager Knocker Williams said that the clubs youth policy was now paying dividends “That was a very young side out there today with six players under the age of 20, if I can keep them together who knows what we might achieve in the future”
