Match Report

Match Report - 25 Oct 2008, Borden Village FC 1st XI beat Swale United

With both teams changed and ready to play, the eagerly awaited local derby between Swale Utd and Borden was in danger of not being played After some frantic telephone calls it was discovered that the appointed referee had received what turned out to be a hoax call late on Friday night informing him that the match had been cancelled However referee Steve Kendall was contacted and kindly stepped in at the last minute to officiate the game, which started 30 minutes late

There was little to chose between both teams in the opening period with both sides having their fair share of possession but the visitors on balance created the better openings After 20 mins Lee Sayers curling free kick into the box was met by Nicky Fuller who climbed the highest to head powerfully home and give Borden the lead For the remainder of the half play was pretty even with both teams having difficulty keeping the ball on the ground due to the strong winds, Borden almost added another when Scott Forster was put through but Swale’s keeper bravely blocked his goal bound shot and seconds before half time he denied Borden again by parrying away Fuller’s half volley

Five minutes after the break Swale United equalised after Borden failed to clear their lines following a corner Mid way through the half Forster produced a good save from the home keeper who got down well to tip away his shot for a corner It was not all Borden ands wale had their chances bur the Borden defence held firm with James Beech, Lee Sayer and the impressive Phil Jackson determined to stay resolute. Swale’s Gaz Hake tried to make his mark against his former club, but headed over when well placed

In the last quarter Borden began to look the most likely to score and with 10 minutes remaining they forced a corner on the right Chris Marsh floated the ball deep to the far post, Borden’s Chris Feliniak headed the ball back across the face of the goal where the unmarked Mark Barker finished from six yards to claim the winner and their first league win of the season

Afterwards Borden’s manager Knocker Williams was full of praise for the way his players handled what to them was a big occasion particularly for the three teenagers playing in their first local derby Williams said “Overall I felt we deserved the win, to be fair we are rebuilding and with a young side it takes time but at last it now seems to be coming together”
