Match Report - 20 Feb 2016, Borden Village FC 1st XI beat Halstead United
The villagers completed the double over struggling Halstead, but it was the visitors who took the lead after 7 mins when Borden’s Matty Cunningham was penalised for a late tackle and the referee pointed to the spot where a well taken penalty sent keeper Charlie Donoghue the wrong way. This early goal unsettled Borden but as the half progressed they began to take the game to Halstead in search of an equaliser forcing a number of corners and it was only desperate defending by the visitors that kept the villagers out. Following the break Borden continued to press and within 10 mins were level when Joe Sands broke away down the left and his cross was turned in by Cunningham at the far post. The goal put the home side in the driving seat and the Borden continued to pile on the pressure and were rewarded ten minutes later when Sam Brown put Liam Newton through to steer the ball wide of the keeper and give the villagers a well deserved lead. There was no let up by the home side who were now well on top and fifteen minutes later Cunningham had turned from villain to hero when he found the far corner of the net with a 20 yard drive from just outside the box and with minutes remaining Borden almost scored a fourth when a goal bound header from Ross Frost was cleared off the line. This win resulted in the villagers moving up 4 places in the table to ninth.
