Match Report - 11 Oct 2014, Borden Village FC 1st XI drew with Staplehurst & Monarchs
Borden had to be content to share the spoils with Staplehurst on Saturday. The villagers got off to a fine start and took the lead after 3mins when George Latham chased a loose ball first and with the defence hesitating read the bounce to head home over the advancing keeper.
This gave the villagers the perfect start and they began to settle and look to increasing their lead but as the game continued Staplehurst kept their shape and looked organised and despite the home side attacking strongly they were unable to penetrate a well organised defence. Following the break it was the visitors who set about reducing the arrears and ten minutes into the half the Borden defence lost concentration and Staplehurst equalised. The goal seemed to unsettle Borden and 5 mins later they were to concede another when having lost the ball in midfield Borden appealed for a an infringement but the referee waved play on and Staplehurst ran through to plant the ball wide of Luke Titshall. Now it was the home side that were chasing the game and Borden’s turn to put pressure on the visitors and when Paul Teague came on for Borden the pattern of the game changed. Borden won a series of corners one of which Staplehurst failed to clear and Teague pounced to hook the ball into the net. In the final ten mins both teams had breakaway chances to score the winner but the game ended all square with both sides accepting that a draw was a fair result.
