Match Report - 08 Feb 2014, Borden Village FC 1st XI lost to Sheppey & Sheerness United
Due to the inclement weather conditions the Kent County FA ruled in mid week that this eagerly awaited Kent Cup Tie was to be played on the 3g Pitch at Sittingbourne Community College. There was little to choose between the two sides in the opening 20 mins but the home side started to carve out the better chances with George Latham and Dan Hudson going close but unable to provide the killer touch. Sheppey & Sheerness currently top of the premier division had to defend resolutely but 5 mins before the break Borden won a free kick just on the edge of the box. Up stepped Sam Brown to unleash a powerful drive which flew into the net to give his side a well deserved lead. Following the break there was no quarter given but on the hour the Islanders equalised with a similar goal resulting from a free kick outside the box. Ten minutes later the visitors were gifted a goal when a corner was not properly cleared and the ball was edged over the line to give Sheppey the lead. Borden went out in search of an equaliser and ten minutes later Ross Frost powered through to plant the ball wide of the keeper. With 12 mins remaining Borden looked the most likely to score but disaster struck when Borden’s Michael Green who was having an outstanding game was penalised for what can only be described as an innocuous challenge but the referee saw it differently and produced what proved to be his second yellow card and Green was dismissed. To make matters worse Sheppey scored from the resultant free kick and Borden were now on the back foot. With ten minutes remaining Paul Teague rode a strong tackle and set up Latham to hammer home what was thought to be the equaliser but to everyone’s amazement the referee brought play back and awarded a free kick to the Sheppey defender. Borden’s Ben Taylor over protested and out came the red card and he was given his marching orders With minutes remaining and Borden down to nine men there was no coming back this time and its Sheppey that go through to the semi finals.
