Match Report

Match Report - 28 Sep 2013, Borden Village FC Reserves lost to Hawkinge Town

We knew a back to back game against Hawkinge was going to be tough
after the result last week but was surprised to see them only have 6
players that featured last week. Due to players being away and having
work commitments we struggled to get a side together today. That
meant dusting off the boots and getting to wear the new strip for the first
time! With a bare 11 we started off a lot better than last week and after
15 minutes Baverstock pulled the ball back for Hudson that looked like
he was going to put the village 1-0 up but it wasn't too be as he fired
over the bar. Again we pressed forward with Hawkinge looking
dangerous on the counter. Tong supplied a cross that was spilled by the
keeper and Nelson looked again like he was on hand to tuck away but
he misjudged the ball and could only poke it back to the keeper. The
first goal finally came with a great ball in from the right wing that evaded
Tong for Mortimer to rise and lob his header over Neat. It was a well
worked goal but not really what Hawkinge deserved. Then there was a
momentum changer. A long throw was missed by everybody and the
Hawkinge goalkeeper missed the ball and palmed it into net. He look
gutted, however crazily the referee said he felt the gk didn't touch the
ball. Everybody else saw it but the man who matters didn't. Half Time
0-1.
The second half started crazily for Borden as we looked to keep the ball
as Hawkinge pressed and their hard work won them the ball with
Mortimer again the thorn in our sides as he had a run that ended up with
him drilling home from 25 yards. Borden still worked hard with the
tireless Baverstock running his socks off up front on his own. He created
the next chance as he pulled wide to receive the ball and then laid the
ball into Hudson who showed great composure by shifting the ball onto
his weaker right foot and cooly placing it into the top corner. This really
fired up the Village. Hudson working tirelessly in the middle with Prince
doing a great job of picking up the pieces and distributing the ball.
However Hawkinge we're exploiting the pace of Borden's player/
manager by knocking the ball into the space behind. Then some
indecision in the Borden defence allowed a long ball to bounce in the
box which fell to Neilson who dispatched a curling effort into bottom
corner. This was an awful goal to concede and really knocked our
confidence. With no subs and a few players tiring it was hard work for
Borden and another soft goal killed the game off as Mortimer had a
mazy run and a lofted ball for Neilson to run onto. Neat hesitated and as
he back peddled the striker cooly rounded the keeper to slot home.
Despite the scoreline I felt the players worked tirelessly to the end and
just came up against a better side on the day.
