Match Report - 04 Sep 2010, Borden Village FC 1st XI beat LYDD TOWN

With six first team players unavailable through suspensions and injuries managers Knocker Williams and Ian Jackson only had a bare minimum of 12 players for their opening game of the season however they set about their task to secure a win in a purposeful way. The opening 20 mins saw both sides creating little by way of scoring opportunities and Borden looked to be in trouble when Grant Murphy had to come off half an hour into the game he was replaced by teenager Adam Hughes who was given his first taste of County football. Following a goalless first half Borden started the second period brightest with new signing Glen Smith working tirelessly up front. Midway through the half Borden broke the deadlock when they were awarded a free kick just inside the oppositions half Sam Brown delivered a delightful ball deep into the area and it was Mark Barker who climbed the highest to head the ball back across the six yard box to see Nicky Fuller arrive late at the far post to score with a diving header The goal gave the home side a much needed lift and Glen Smith went close to adding to the tally. With fifteen minutes left the visitors drew level with a deflected shot which caught Borden’s keeper Michael Neat wrong footed and a draw then seemed on the cards but the new look Borden side refused to give up and kept pressing in search of the winner and were rewarded with five minutes remaining when from a Gary Richards cross the ball ran loose in the six yard box and the Lydd defence failed to clear and Mark Barker was at hand to smash home the winner. Afterwards Jacko and Knocker had nothing but praise for their team for the way that their hard work and determination resulted in a win with everyone out there contributing to a well earned victory
