Match Report - 24 Oct 2009, Borden Village FC 1st XI beat Pembury

With wind and rain at the start making conditions difficult it was Borden who adapted best and looked the most likely to score in the opening stages so it came as a shock when lowly Pembury who were still looking for their first league win opened the scoring with a goal against the run of play. Within minutes of the restart Borden levelled when Lee Sayer floated a free kick deep into the Pembury box and teenager Dan Bryant timed his run to perfection to head firmly past the home keeper For the remainder of the half Borden looked the stronger side by far and despite pinning Pembury down for long periods, failed to add to their tally. Borden started the second period where they left off and would have taken the lead but the Pembury keeper somehow kept them in it with a string of saves Midway through the half Borden went in front when young Phil Jackson who was outstanding throughout forced his way down the right did well to keep the ball in play and his measured delivery into the danger area found Ashleigh Taylor who finished clinically from six yards Once behind the home side in fairness tried to get themselves back in it but at the other end Borden’s Alan Whitehead was twice denied by the home keeper Minutes later Borden felt hard done by when a defensive slip allowed Pembury to score with a sucker punch With ten minutes remaining Borden set out in search of the winner and when the home side could only clear to the edge of their box Borden’s Nicky Fuller fastened on to it and scored with a powerful drive from 25 yards what turned out to be the deserved winner. Afterwards manager Knocker Williams said that the difference in his team this season was “Last year if we conceded first we rarely took something from the game but this season we have come from behind on three occasions to take all three points, our new signings have enabled us to develop a great team spirit and with the determination we now have we can all see that our confidence is growing match by match. Today we showed great character once again and fantastic determination but we were also really disappointed to concede both goals but on the plus side the good thing about this team is they keep going and keep going and they should get enormous credit for it I think that we have a lot more in us because we are still rebuilding and I know that there is a lot more to come”
