Match Report - 26 Sep 2009, Borden Village FC 1st XI beat Platt united

Borden travelled to Platt on Saturday in search of their first league win and came back triumphant. For the first fifteen minutes Borden dominated play and were unlucky not to take the lead when Alan Whitehead looked certain to score but blasted over from 6 yards. After 20 mins were Borden were caught with the sucker punch when in a rare Platt attack they forced a corner and from the resultant kick scored at the near post This goal against the run of play unsettled the visitors and despite creating a number of openings their final ball let them down

Ten minutes after the break Platt scored a second following an excellent one two passing move and Borden were now faced with an uphill task if they were to take anything from the game With 20 mins remaining the breakthrough came when Dan Mills put through Lee Marsh who slotted the ball home to give his side the lift they badly needed Five minutes later Borden equalised when an Ashley Taylor corner led to a goal mouth scramble and Marsh pounced again to force the ball home Sensing now they could win it James Beech worked a clever one two found Mark Barker on the edge of the box who side stepped two defenders to coolly slot home the winner In the remaining minutes Platt pushed forward in desperation but the Borden defence ably marshalled by Andy Peters and Lee Sayer held firm and with seconds remaining Borden could have made it 4 when substitute Dan Bryant found himself free in the box but his well struck volley sailed over the bar

Afterwards manager Knocker Williams said that “This win was long overdue and we now have more points on the board than we did at this time last season.” He went on to say that he was delighted with the way his players refused to throw the towel in and to come back the way we did says a lot about the character of the boys He added “To be honest I was disappointed to lose more players in the close season to local rivals but it has given me the opportunity to make new signings and rebuild once again and at the moment the atmosphere here, generated by those who have been loyal to the club, and the new signings we have made, is brilliant This was evident in the number of people associated with Borden who supported our Golf day on Friday a total of 38 took part and we all had a great day, people are already asking when is the next one!”
